SOFAR spheres and Top Secret Rescue Missions

Jan 04, 2011 in General | Posted by Physics-online team at 3:50 PM

Physicist Maurice Ewing was tasked with the problem of how to locate World War 2 pilots who ditch in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

His solution, the SOFAR sphere was simple and ingenious.

When pilots ditched they were instructed not to use the radio, because the enemy may locate them, but to drop a hollow metal sphere into the ocean and wait.

How the SOFAR sphere works is explained beautifully in a very interesting physics video lecture. The explanation is within the grasp of A-level physics students, involving only familiar concepts such as refraction, pressure and wave motion. And it is delivered superbly in a style that will or, more realistically, may engross even the most reluctant A-level physics student.

Rugby School IOP Conference

May 19, 2009 in | Posted by Physics-online team at 3:31 PM

I've been invited to show Physics-online.com at the Rugby school IOP conference on Thursday June 4th. Last year's conference was very interesting and I trust this will be even better. Thanks to Rugby School for putting on an excellent event.

If you are attending the conference be sure to see Physics-online.com in the Temple Reading Room in the Library.
